As a supporter of Graham Platner, I believe it is time for him to step up, show us his skills at peacemaking, and stop feeding the fires of vitriol that have started between him and John Fetterman.
Wouldn’t it be appropriate for Platner to reach out to Fetterman and display how to make peace as well as war? It could start by apologizing for personal attacks. Yes, authenticity is important, but it can extend beyond wearing work clothes (congrats to the button-down shirt Platner wore on the night of his primary win). Speech matters greatly; derogatory remarks aren’t going to get this country where we want it to go.
It only shows weakness to treat others with disdain when we disagree. Perhaps a statement like this could work: “Sorry about demeaning a future colleague. I’m also sorry we had to use scathing language to express our opinions. We both have many similar values. Let’s work on those together.”
Spouting venom just feeds the legacy of our current president.
