HALLOWELL – Yesterday, the river ran dry and Lorraine Lida Stubbs left this earth on July 2, 2026, seeking a new adventure.
Born in Hampden, Maine, on Feb. 24, 1940, to Perry A. Stubbs and Ivy Knowles Stubbs, she has now joined her two siblings, Richard L. Stubbs and Robert P. Stubbs, both deceased.
Lorraine’s only remaining family consists of two nieces, Dianne Mushrow and her children; and Frances Savoy and her children; a nephew, Robert P. Stubbs, Jr.; and a stepdaughter, Rachel C. White. The love of her life, Harvey Crimmin, died many years ago.
She attended Hampden schools and Hampden Academy, receiving a B.S. from the University of Maine at Orono, a master’s in science from Colby College in Waterville, and completed doctoral studies in oceanography at the University of Washington in Seattle, Wash. A believer in lifelong learning, she studied in schools all over the country receiving certificates of advanced standing in chemistry, geology, and environmental studies.
A born teacher, her life’s work never strayed far from teaching. Lorraine’s career began working at high schools here in Maine; she then became an adjunct professor at Unity College, helping to develop their current curriculum at that time. Her next adventure was Director of the Conservation Education Foundation of Maine and Headmaster of the Maine Conservation School under the direction of the State of Maine. In this position she became part of Maine Fisheries and Wildlife and then the Department of Education. A career change led to the Department of Marine Resources where she taught teachers and students to study the ocean. In addition, she helped the department encourage the utilization of its fisheries resources and served as the representative on the National Marine Fisheries Education Board, which continued until retirement.
During this period, Lorraine also worked for the National Institute for Creative Education teaching educators from many schools and colleges about the ocean environment. Leading fieldtrips to various places in the world, she enjoyed teaching and travel.
After retirement, traveling, gardening, attending classes, and teaching in adult senior colleges took most of her time. Coffee with friends and a good walk in the woods made everything right.
Lorraine sailed the “river of life” with its many distractions always moving ahead without complaint and encouraging others to do the same. Life was hard, but beautiful. Now she seeks another adventure.
No funeral will be held, however a celebration of life will take place at a date and time to be announced where friends, neighbors and relatives are invited to join together in a happy, good time.
Arrangements have been entrusted to: Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, ME 04330. Condolences, stories and photos may be shared by visiting http://www.plummerfh.com.
