Augusta Assistant City Manager William Post died Monday morning from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, according to a statement issued by the city of Augusta. He was 55.

Post began as the assistant city manager in 2024 after serving as assistant city manager in Waterville since 2022 and Waterville’s acting city manager from January to July 2023. His career spanned 30 years in municipal and county government.

“Words cannot adequately express the loss we are feeling,” City Manager Jared Mills said in the statement. “Bill was a trusted colleague, mentor, and friend to so many. His wisdom, compassion, creativity, and unwavering commitment to Augusta have left the city stronger than he found it.”

Mills said Post’s greatest lesson was that work is only a part of who people are.

“Bill reminded us, every day, that our greatest accomplishments are found in our families, our friendships, and the people we love,” he said. “He was immensely proud of his wife and children, and there wasn’t a conversation that didn’t include sharing one of their latest milestones or accomplishments. That perspective shaped the way he led and the way he lived. Our hearts are with his wife, son, daughter, and entire family during this incredibly difficult time.”

Waterville Mayor Mike Morris said he was immediately impressed with Post after he interviewed for the position and was grateful for the work he did for the city.

“He definitely left his mark here in Waterville,” Morris said. “Even though it was brief, it was still memorable.”

Morris said he enjoyed his many conversations with Post about New England sports teams and that Post always spoke highly about his family and how proud he was of his children.

“He was a good guy, and he’ll certainly be missed,” Morris said.

Post, who earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern Maine and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Maine, served longest as town manager in Bowdoinham, where he worked for eight years starting in 2011.

Before that, he worked as Knox County administrator for two years and as Waldoboro town manager for nearly three years.

From Bowdoinham, he work as Rockport’s town manager for two years and as Sagadahoc County administrator for nine months before serving as assistant city manager in Waterville for two and a half years.
