If Graham Platner truly cares about Maine, he will step down now so that another Senate candidate can be chosen. Gov. Janet Mills would be my choice for a replacement because of her long service to Maine and her ability to stand up to President Donald Trump.
About her age: Mills is 78 years old, six years younger than Bernie Sanders, who endorsed Platner. Sanders shows no signs of retiring until 2031, when his term ends, and he will be 89 years old at that time.
Mills has said she would serve only one term in the Senate. I believe her. Six years of an experienced, intelligent senator would be good for Maine. In that time we can find a younger, suitable candidate. There are many good people in this state to choose from.
Sen. Susan Collins’ ads tout her “results,” money she has brought into Maine. That is good but that is her job. What concerns me is what she has not done for Maine. Because of her decisions, she has left Mainers with fewer rights, a higher cost of living and an uncertain future.
Democrats must not lose this seat.
