My husband and I have had two close encounters with Barry Manilow, who played his final Portland concert on July 3. On a book tour, we were having lunch in Los Angeles with a Penguin representative who had been sent to see us through our first media interviews. Manilow was at a table close by and I remarked that our teenage daughter was a fan and I would like to get his autograph. Our minder replied, “Don’t you dare or I’ll leave you right here.”
Later that summer, we were moving our daughter from her sorority house and there was a full- size cardboard likeness of Barry Manilow on the sidewalk. Every time I passed it, I was grateful it wasn’t coming home with us; our car was already full. But, surprise! It was our daughter’s. It did end up spending the summer with us.
