The city of Augusta plans to open the Augusta Civic Center as a daytime cooling center Tuesday and Wednesday as temperatures are projected to reach over 90 degrees.

The Civic Center, located at 76 Community Drive, will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days. Pets are welcome in the facility but must be secured in a crate or carrier.

Other cooling center locations across the state can be found on the Maine Emergency Management Agency website.

Hunter Tubbs, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Gray, said Tuesday will be the peak of the heat in the Augusta area with high temperatures in the lower to mid-90s. With elevated dew points as well, the heat index is expected to be in the middle to upper 90s during the afternoon and early evening.

Tubbs said this period of hot weather will be shorter than the previous one, with temperatures in the upper 80s on Wednesday and continuing to cool for the rest of the week.
