Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero was killed by ICE agents in Biddeford in yet another tragic, violent overreaction by ICE agents. These overreactions have killed too many American citizens and community residents who are immigrants with legal standing.
The video obtained by this newspaper of the shooting and the rapid, outraged response of Biddeford residents, then hundreds of additional Maine residents, is important in sending a loud “No” to the Department of Homeland Security and these untrained, masked, armed ICE agents who prowl our cities and towns looking for “criminals” but rounding up just about anyone they deem suspicious. Killing or beating too many.
I chair a network of 220 elders in Peabody, Massachusetts, who engage in various Defend Democracy actions. We are proud of our Maine neighbors showing their courageous outrage and dissent. We will be adding our voices to call Senate and other committees who “oversee” Homeland Security and demanding a cessation of this violence and thuggery that is wrecking lives and families and appears to operate with impunity. $70 billion to fund this? Outrageous.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
