This is in response to Emerson College Professor Rich West’s July 10 op-ed on the symbolism of seagulls as a metaphor for Maine today (“Portland’s trapped gull was a metaphor for our times”). Here is another view, from a 1961 graduate of Emerson College and a writer on the arts in Maine who has lived in Maine since 1939.
Seagulls are survivors. We in Maine will survive during this political upheaval in our nation and state, like the many, many, seagulls across Maine who are hardy and alive. Maine will bring an important message about freedom across the nation and lead the way in resolving problems with positive ideas through the voting process.
