Every day, police across our nation pull over drivers. They manage to stop them, address the issue, and do it without killing the driver. Why is it that ICE resorts to violence so quickly, even when they have the wrong person, and always without body cameras?
Their approach of treating everyone with hostility — dehumanizing people because they might be undocumented — starts with their training and their culture. It is dangerous to us all. It needs to stop and we need to rid our government of politicians like Susan Collins, who have consistently supported funding of ICE.
This is not an argument for free and open borders, but the current agency is so flawed it must be dissolved. We must start again with a fair and effective approach to immigration.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
