Suicide is the second-leading cause of death among Maine’s youth. It is important that we all work together to do whatever we can to help protect our state’s most vulnerable citizens.
I am proud to say that last month our Legislature unanimously passed legislation to help address this issue. It was a wonderful moment to see everyone come together to support our youth. This legislation, which was recently signed in to law, provides an important way for Maine to prevent youth suicide. Under the law, all school staff will have a one- to two-hour suicide awareness training.
By equipping teachers and other school employers with the training necessary to recognize the warning signs of suicide, we will save lives. More people who are routinely in contact with youth will now have a chance to catch the warning signs. This legislation helps decrease the chances of a tragedy occurring.
Suicide is a heartbreak that can be prevented, and we must do whatever it takes to protect Maine’s children.
