Leeds man charged with assault, theft, terrorizing and firearms possession
READFIELD — A Leeds man is charged with hitting and threatening his girlfriend before stealing her television remote.
David Fortin, 43, was charged with domestic violence assault, domestic violence terrorizing, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and theft.
A 52-year-old Butman Boulevard resident called police a little before 9 p.m. Sunday after Fortin reportedly pushed her and intentionally stepped on her foot before threatening to kill her and burn down her mobile home, according to an affidavit filed in Kennebec County Superior Court by State Police Trooper William Plourde.
The woman said Fortin, who is prohibited from owning a firearm because of a previous domestic assault convictions, had a gun at his mother’s Leeds home, where he was staying while she was in Florida. The woman said Fortin had stolen her cellphone and her television remote when he left.
Police found Fortin’s truck at his mother’s house. He initially refused to leave the home but emerged just as troopers were preparing to call a tactical team.
Fortin said the argument started after he made a derogatory and racist remark about his girlfriend’s children. In the process, he said the woman destroyed his computer and cellphone. Fortin denied touching or threatening her.
Police found the woman’s cellphone and computer at Fortin’s mother’s house. He told troopers that his mother kept a gun in her bathroom closet. Fortin said he never touched the gun because he is prohibited from doing so, but he said he had seen the gun in the closet. Police found the gun, and ammunition, in a closet in a black nylon bag.
“Based on Fortin’s statement that he had never handled the firearm it would have been impossible for him to know it was there due to the bag being solid in color,” Plourde wrote.
