Portland police say the 52-year-old woman found dead on Douglass Street Monday morning was a cyclist who may have had a medical event.
Lt. Robert Martin said the woman’s family has been mostly notified, but police are waiting so more relatives may hear the news. It appeared as if she struck a parked van.
The death is not considered suspicious, but investigators are still eager to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the crash or saw the woman immediately before her death.
Her body was discovered just before 6:40 a.m. Monday, and police said they believe the woman was headed for the Kiwanis pool.
The woman’s body will be taken to the state medical examiner’s office to determine the cause and manner of death.
Anyone who saw the woman riding should call police at 874-8575.
It is believed that she would have left her Westbrook home between 5:30 a.m. and 6:15 a.m., and would have taken Brighton Avenue toward Portland. She was wearing a green cycling shirt, black riding pants, a multi-colored helmet and was carrying a gray backpack. Her road-style bicycle was yellow.
