UNITY — The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association will host 2012 Great Maine Apple Day from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, at its Common Ground Education Center, 294 Crosby Brook Road; rain or shine.
The event celebrates the history, flavor and tradition of Maine apples, while recognizing the importance of promoting and maintaining food diversity in perennial agriculture.
Featured this year will be: rare and heirloom Maine apple varieties; educational workshops and talks on Maine’s apple history and organic tree care; wine and cider making; an apple pie contest; activities for children, and more.
The apple pie contest begins at 3:30 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to bring apples they have grown, or discovered, to be identified by our expert team of Maine apple identifiers (including well-known Pomologist John Bunker).
Local and organic apples will be available for purchase, as well as apple products, baked goods, gourmet chocolates, cheese and wine.
Admission cost $4 for the general public, or $2 for members of MOFGA or the Maine Pomological Society.
The event is sponsored by MOFGA, Fedco, University of Maine Cooperative Extension, and the Maine Department of Agriculture.
