* Favianna Rodriguez: Art and Activism is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at the Diamond Building, Ostrove Auditorium.

Rodriguez is known for her vibrant posters dealing with war, immigration, globalization and social movements. Her lecture on art as a catalyst for social change follows a pop-up exhibition of her posters, which is on display in Pulver Pavilion.

* Bicentennial Event Downtown — Colby at the Movies, will begin at noon Saturday, Oct. 20, at Railroad Square Cinema.

There will be a special presentation of Colby’s bicentennial video, “In Their Footsteps,” as well as student film projects.

* Bicentennial Event Downtown — Colby and Waterville, 200 Years: Celebrating Our Unique Bond is set for 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at Hathaway Creative Center.

A reception and a faculty panel discussion “1813: The World, Waterville and Colby,” featuring memorabilia from Colby’s Special Collections.

1813: The World, Waterville and Colby is set for 4:30-5:15 p.m.

Katz professor of history Raffael Scheck will speak on how world events and conflicts in Europe had important consequences for Maine’s statehood and for the founding of Colby.

Assistant professor of history Daniel Tortora will speak on the United States in 1813, the time of Colby’s founding

College historian and emeritus dean Earl Smith will talk about Waterville and Colby’s relationship.

Gift presentation to the city by President William D. Adams to Waterville Mayor Karen Heck, class of 1974, will take place from 5:30 to 6 p.m.

* “In Their Footsteps”: recital with Gjergji Gaqi and Dori Smith, classes of 2007 and 2008, will begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, in Lorimer Chapel.

The two music majors return for a recital during the bicentennial. Gaqi, who earned a doctoral degree in piano performance at the University of Michigan, and soprano Smith, a doctoral candidate in voice at the University of Arizona, present a richly varied program of piano and vocal music from the 19th and 20th centuries. Featured works are by Brahms, Schubert, Robert Muczynski, Liszt, Mozart, Lori Laitman, and Ernest Chausson.

* Foundational Principles of Sustainability, Thomas Wessels, will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, at Olin Auditorium, Olin Science Center.

In the Hollis Lecture, Wessels, ecologist and founding director of the master’s degree program in conservation biology at Antioch University New England, will cover three foundational principles: the law of limits to growth, the second law of thermodynamics and its relationship to entropy, and the law of self-organization. Examples of how these laws work in the natural world will be used to show how they can be applied to human systems such as a community or an economy. Wessels is chairman of the Center for Whole Communities.
