Two crashes closed the northbound lanes of Interstate 295 in Freeport during Thursday morning rush hour.

Maine State Police spokesman Stephen McCausland said the separate crashes occurred at miles 23 and 25 around 9 a.m. Each involved at least three vehicles. McCausland said one person was taken to a hospital in an ambulance, but he did not know the extent of their injuries.

“Traffic northbound was down to a crawl or blocked entirely until the wrecks could be removed from the highway,” McCausland said.

Maine Department of Transportation spokesman Paul Merrill said one lane reopened at 10:30 a.m. and the other shortly after 11 a.m.
