Monmouth garage destroyed by fire
No one was injured in a fire that destroyed most of a garage in Monmouth on Sunday.
The fire may have been started by a wood stove, which property owner James Cunliffe had started while working in the garage Sunday morning, but thought he had extinguished before leaving to drive to Augusta. Monmouth Assistant Fire Chief Bruce Balfour said more investigation is needed to confirm the cause of the fire.
Firefighters from Monmouth, Greene, Leeds and Wales responded.
The fire was reported shortly before 1 p.m. Sunday at 20 Robinson Drive. It was confined to a two-car detached garage and did not threaten any other buildings.
The narrow, icy private road made it difficult for tankers to reach the scene, so firefighters eventually had to stretch 500 feet of hose to a truck on Packard Road. In spite of the challenge, they extinguished the fire in about 20 minutes, Balfour said.
Balfour said part of the roof caved in, and there was probably little that could be salvaged from the garage.
