Overturned trailer blocked Civic Center Drive
AUGUSTA — An overturned trailer temporarily blocked both lanes of Civic Center Drive at Leighton Road Thursday morning.
Augusta police and firefighters responded, and motorists in both lanes were detoured onto Leighton Road. Officers with the commercial unit of the Maine State Police were also called to the scene.
The accident occurred about 8:30 a.m. Apparently the vehicle towing the trailer did not overturn. Civic Center Drive is also known as Route 27.
No injuries were reported. The road was re-opened by 9:30 a.m.
Driver who hit officer sought by police
TOGUS — Police are on the lookout for a man who reportedly drove his car into a police officer with the Togus VA hospital Thursday morning.
According to a radio broadcast to area police, the Togus officer was questioning the man about stolen copper when the man ran to his car, got in and backed into the officer.
The open door of the car struck the officer before the man sped away, according to the radio report. Area police were given a description of the man and the vehicle.
The hit and run occurred on property owned by VA Maine Healthcare System-Togus, according to the report.
Togus spokesman Jim Doherty confirmed an incident took place, but declined to provide details, including whether the officer involved was injured, because the investigation was ongoing.
