MONMOUTH — Sixth grade students at Monmouth Middle School recently listened to Rose Goodwin relate her experiences living as a young girl in London during World War II.

Students heard how she survived Nazi bombings that destroyed a good portion of London during The Blitz that started in 1940. Goodwin spoke about what is was like to hurry to bomb shelters during the bombings, what food rationing was like for the people of London and how children played dominos and had school lessons in the subway tunnels. She also described the sights and sounds and shared articles and pictures.

Students were given the opportunity to ask a number of questions.

The sixth-graders, students in Carl Backman’s class, are studying World War II history. “The gift of her stories has made such an impact on my students,” Backman said in a news release from the school.

Goodwin’s visit was arranged by student Julia Johnson and her father Vance.

Students in the class include Olivia Sirois, Breeanna Cameron, Mariah Herr, Johnny McCabe, Brittany Cooley, Kane Gould, Craig Moody, Trevor Gerlach, Trevor Flanagan, Emily Burgess and Jessica Clavet.
