PARIS — The police chiefs in Paris and Norway say the departments ought to merge, not necessarily because it would save money but because a combined police force would better protect the citizens of both communities.
At a joint meeting before both towns’ boards of selectmen Monday night, the chiefs proposed a one-year trial period starting in July when the departments would work as one until the end of the next budget year.
After that, voters would have a chance to merge the two departments permanently. Both towns would have to agree to the merger.
The Sun Journal (http://bit.ly/HcEGNr) reports that Norway Chief Robert Federico and Paris Chief David Verrier say a merger would put more officers on patrol and more resources into the investigation of serious crime.
