NEW SHARON — A Dixmont man was seriously injured when the motorcycle he was driving collided with a car Wednesday afternoon on U.S. Route 2, state police said.
David Porter, 63, had broken bones in his legs and was flown by helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center shortly after the crash about 4 p.m., said Trooper Aaron Turcotte.
He was taken initially by ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington before being flown to the Bangor hospital, where he was listed in stable condition Wednesday night, Turcotte said. Hospital officials on Thursday said they didn’t have information about Porter.
Porter was driving his 2005 Harley Davidson east on U.S. 2 toward Mercer when it collided with a 2004 Nissan four-door sedan being driven by Luanne Wrenn, 51, of Wilton, Turcotte said.
Wrenn had stopped at a stop sign on Route 27 and was turning left onto U.S. 2 when the crash happened, just in front of Douin’s Market. Turcotte said he was standing in the parking lot of the store at the time.
Wrenn told Turcotte she didn’t see the motorcycle before she pulled into its path, forcing Porter to lose control of the motorcycle as he tried to avoid the collision. The motorcycle struck the car, throwing Porter to the pavement, Turcotte said. He was not wearing a helmet.
Carrabassett Valley Police Chief Scott Nichols Sr. also was standing in the store’s parking lot and was talking to Turcotte when the crash happened. Nichols stayed with Porter until other emergency responders arrived within minutes, Turcotte said.
Turcotte does not expect to issue any tickets in relation to the crash. He does not suspect speed was a factor and said Porter was driving in a 45-mph zone. Wrenn was wearing her seat belt and was unharmed in the crash, he said.
The New Sharon Fire Department, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and NorthStar Ambulance assisted at the scene.
