BELGRADE — Absentee voting in the June 8 school budget and town elections has begun. Voters can obtain a ballot between 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays and until 7 p.m. Thursdays at the Town Office, 990 Augusta Road.

Ballots also can be requested by calling the Town Office at 207-495-2258 or emailing townclerk@townofbelgrade.com. Absentee ballots will be available through Thursday, June 3.

Voters can take their ballots with them or cast them at the Town Office. Completed ballots can be returned in the Town Office, in the secured ballot drop box under the porch on the north side of the building (turn left at the flagpole), or to the Center for All Seasons on Election Day. Voters are reminded to sign the back of the ballot envelope.

Polls at the center, 1 Center Drive, will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 8.

Residents must be registered to vote. Voters can register at the Town Office or at the polls on Election Day. They will need a Maine driver’s license with a current physical address or a photo ID. If either of these do not have a current living address, a piece of mail, a utility bill, a phone bill, a copy of a lease or a rental agreement must be provided. Voters also can swear an oath of residency.

Voters will consider ratifying a school budget of $40.5 million that Regional School Unit 18 voters approved at the district’s budget meeting May 20. Additionally, voters will consider three town items:

Question No. 1: To see if the town will appropriate $25,000 from the undesignated fund to construct a cement pad for storage containers at the Transfer Station, with any unexpended balance lapsing into the Solid Waste Capital Reserve. Additionally, to see if the Town will appropriate $33,874 from the undesignated fund to raise the balance of the Solid Waste Capital Reserve to $50,000. On Dec. 31, 2020, the undesignated fund balance was $3,530,027. The Solid Waste Capital Reserve balance will be $16,126 following a paving project in June.

Question No. 2: To see if the town will appropriate the lapsed amount of $45,000 from the undesignated fund to purchase a one-ton facility maintenance truck. The truck was not purchased in 2020 due to COVID-19. On Dec. 31, 2020, the undesignated fund balance was $3,530,027.

Question No. 3: To see if the town will authorize the tax collector to accept prepayment of property taxes prior to the delivery of the tax commitment to the collector by the assessors without payment of interest.
