WILTON – A man who had his license revoked as a habitual offender was driving a car in the crash that killed him and a woman Monday on U.S. Route 2 in Wilton, according to a Franklin County assistant district attorney and court records.
Joseph Breton, 36, of Jay, and Meta Sevigny, 80, of New Vineyard, both died at the scene of the 4 p.m. crash near the entrance of the Comfort Inn.
Breton had multiple convictions for driving-related violations dating back to 1995. The most recent conviction resulted in Breton getting sentenced in 2010 to serve six months in jail and pay a $1,000 fine for operating after revocation, Franklin County Assistant District Attorney Andrew Robinson said.
The most recent sentence was a mandatory minimum based on the charge, Robinson said.
Breton was convicted of operating under the influence twice, in 1999 and again in 2008. He had four convictions for operating after suspension and had his license revoked as a habitual offender, according to Robinson and court records.
Breton was driving a 2004 Chrysler Sebring west toward Wilton before the crash. He was making an unsafe, illegal attempt to pass another vehicle when his car collided head-on with a 2000 Ford Ranger pickup truck, being driven in the opposite direction by David Miller, 44, of Wilton, police
Chief Heidi Wilcox said. Sevigny was a passenger in Miller’s truck.
After the initial collision, a 2000 Saturn sedan driven by Thomas Lake, 50, of Jay, struck Breton’s car. Lake was also traveling West, behind Breton, Wilcox said.
Wilcox said Wednesday that an investigation determined excessive speed and reckless driving caused the crash. She did not immediately return a call Thursday for further details.
Wilcox on Wednesday did not know what speed the vehicles were traveling, but said her department’s investigators determined Breton’s car was traveling at an unsafe speed in the 50 mph zone and driving recklessly.
Wilcox previously described the highway as icy at the time of the crash, but the investigation determined that the icy road conditions developed after the collision, she said.
Miller was listed in fair condition Tuesday afternoon at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
Breton’s passenger, Carlton Elliott, 22, of Industry, was in stable condition Tuesday afternoon at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington.
Lake was not hurt in the crash and his car sustained minor damage, Wilcox said. The other two vehicles were destroyed in the crash that happened just southwest of Franklin Memorial Hospital.
