David Smith, vice chairman of the Greater Augusta Utility District Board, is vying for election to an Augusta City Council at-large (citywide) seat.
The Greater Augusta Utility District Board recently approved new water rate increases of 35 percent for sewer and 40 percent for stormwater service for all ratepayers.
The rate increase approved by the board, of which Smith is vice chairman, has led to a lawsuit by area residents, and these increases have become a local scandal.
I will not cast my vote for Smith, who I believe is a dangerous tax-and-spend bureaucrat. In these hard economic times, we simply cannot afford to have Smith on the Augusta City Council, where he could vote to further increase our rates and taxes.
