ELLSWORTH — A Hampden man has been sentenced to 5 ½ years in prison after pleading guilty to being drunk and causing a crash that took the lives of two Ivy League students.
Jon J. Dow was sentenced this week in Hancock County Superior Court after pleading guilty to charges including manslaughter and operating a motor vehicle under the influence of intoxicants.
Authorities say the May 2010 crash claimed the lives of 27-year-old Tam Ngoc Tran and 26-year-old Cinthya Nathalie Felix Perez. Both were illegal immigrants who had graduated from UCLA before pursuing graduate studies — Tran at Brown University in Providence, R.I., and Perez at Columbia University in New York City.
Both advocated citizenship for illegal immigrants pursuing higher education.
Dow’s lawyer tells the Bangor Daily News his client is remorseful.
