AUGUSTA — Gov. Paul LePage is commending a state task force for finding $25 million in savings to balance the state budget.
LePage says the “Streamline and Prioritize Core Government Services Task Force,” which completed its work Monday, identified ways to maximize efficiency in state spending. The task force will present its recommendations to the Committee on Appropriations and Financial Affairs by Dec. 15.
Finance Commissioner Sawin Millett, who chairs the 12-member, bipartisan task force, says the proposed savings leave the state in better fiscal shape moving forward.
The savings cut across a wide range of programs and services. But it unanimously rejected a recommendation to close the Downeast Correctional Facility in Machiasport.
