Police on Friday were investigating a woman’s claim that she was kidnapped and stabbed Thursday night.
Hallowell Police Chief Eric Nason said his department launched an investigation shortly after 11 p.m. on Thursday after receiving a third-party report that a woman had been kidnapped. Police initially believed the incident took place in Hallowell, but determined Friday it likely took place in Augusta, and Augusta police took over the investigation.
“We were concerned she was being held against her will and had been stabbed,” Nason said.
Hallowell police searched for the woman, who they declined to identify, but didn’t find her until Friday morning, when she was reached by phone and said she was in Gardiner.
“She indicated she was out of danger,” Nason said.
The woman couldn’t tell police where she was in Gardiner, but she agreed to go to the Hallowell Police Department and make a statement. She told police she had been held against her will by a male acquaintance.
Nason did not describe the women’s injuries but said officers recommended she seek medical attention.
He said his department contacted Augusta police about the incident. Augusta Police Sgt. Richard Dubois said Friday his department is investigating. Dubois said there is no danger to the public.
