The town of Jay’s police and public works departments plan to participate in a collaborative program, Sand for Seniors.
Employees of the two departments will deliver a bucket of sand/salt to community members to use on their icy walkways or driveways. Because of insurance restrictions, they cannot spread the sand/salt.
Landlords should be supplying tenants with sand, according to a news release from Shiloh LaFreniere, town manager.
The program is for senior citizens that are otherwise not able to pick up sand/salt from public works on their own.
Paris Farmers Union has donated 50 buckets for this program.
To request a bucket or a refill, call 207-897-6766 or email [email protected].
Same-day delivery may not always be available depending on manpower, so citizens should plan ahead.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
