AUGUSTA — A birding watching club is expanding the size of a preserve in the Mud Pond area of Monmouth by 241 acres.
The Stanton Bird Club of Lewiston is receiving the land from the Central Maine Power Company. The company plan to transfer more than 4,600-acres of wetlands and other property as part of its $1.4 billion transmission system upgrade.
The Mud Pond area contains more than 7,407 feet of stream, 4,770 feet of shoreline, 71 acres of wetland and 183 acres of deer wintering area. The land borders the club’s existing Woodbury Pond Sanctuary, a portion of which will be developed into a part of CMP’s new transmission corridor.
The land also protects the western side of the club’s existing sanctuary.
