MADISON — A 69-year-old man whose right arm was severed and who suffered other severe injuries in a lawn tractor accident Wednesday afternoon was in stable condition at the hospital Friday, according to his daughter.
Eugene St. Peter’s ear and the side of his face were also scraped off and his left thumb was severed in the accident at his Cedar Street home, his daughter Marla St. Peter said Friday.
He underwent a nine-hour surgery Wednesday night at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where doctors performed a skin graft on his face and cleaned the other wounds, she said.
He was doing well Friday morning and was scheduled to have another surgery later in the day to continue the skin graft, according to his daughter, 43, of Waterville.
St. Peter’s wife, Rose, called 911 for help after the accident, Marla St. Peter said, declining to discuss any other details about the accident.
She said that before the accident, “He was in decent health other than suffering a stroke in 2001, but was very high functioning.”
Initial reports from police said it was St. Peter’s left arm that was severed.
Madison Police Cpl. Joe Mitchell said St. Peter was apparently run over by his Husqvarna lawn tractor Wednesday about 3:35 p.m. after he somehow ended up on the ground.
He was taken by ambulance to Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan, where he was stabilized, and later taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, according to Mitchell.
Mitchell has said there were no witnesses to the accident, so the cause will not be known until police can speak with St. Peter.
