SIDNEY — Two buildings were destroyed in a fire Monday evening that was seen by motorists passing by on Interstate 95.

The property was located off Drummond Avenue near the interstate, but no one was living there, Sidney fire Chief Richard Jandreau said Tuesday. A Maine State Police trooper spotted the fire just after 10 p.m. Monday from the interstate and called emergency services.

Jandreau said it appears the fire began near a shed and then spread with the wind to a farmhouse barn. The wind initially caused some challenges to firefighters. They were able to clear the scene at about 2 a.m. Tuesday.

The property owner died some time ago and the land was abandoned, Jandreau said. It appeared that someone had been burning some of the old material on the property, but it was not clear if that started the fire. Jandreau said he’ll return to the site with officials from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and state Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry to investigate further.

The Sidney Fire Department was assisted by departments from Belgrade, Oakland, Rome, Smithfield and Waterville. Jandreau noted the important role of the Waterville Communications Center in helping the departments coordinate the response.
