Nearly 30 Skowhegan Area High School youth attended the first Student Leadership Conference March 17 at Skowhegan Area Middle School.

The event, held by R.E.A.C.H. (Relationships Education Aspirations Community Health), a program of School Administrative District 54, was designed to bring students together to share information about their clubs and build leadership skills.

“We believe that each and every one of you has the potential to make a positive impact on your school, community, and beyond,” Danielle Denis, R.E.A.C.H. director, told students, according to a news release from event organizer Somerset Public Health.

The morning featured student-led activities followed by presentations about each of the student clubs.

Participants then heard from a panel of youth leaders involved in statewide efforts.

“We believe that by fostering a culture of leadership and community engagement, we can help our students become more successful both in and out of the classroom,” said Bruce Mochamer, principal of Skowhegan Area High School.
