The Kennebec Estuary Land Trust invites trail enthusiasts to Trail Building 101, scheduled for 2-5 p.m. Thursday, June 15, at Thorne Head Preserve in Bath.
People can join Preserves Manager Dillon Mulhern to learn techniques of how to scout, plan and construct long-lasting trails for the enjoyment of walkers, bikers, birders and more. This free event is suitable for novice trial builders 12 and older, according to a news release from the trust.
Thorne Head Preserve is located at the northern end of High Street in Bath. Participants will meet Mulhern in the preserve parking area and then progress to different locations in the preserve to gain hands-on experience with the various aspects of sustainable trail construction.
From observing the landscape and preventing erosion to understanding water redirection and protecting sensitive habitat, there is more to laying out a trail than just clearing away ground vegetation. Mulhern will also demonstrate how to build the most common trail infrastructure, such as trail bridges and water bars.
This light rain-or-shine event is open to the public thanks to Now You’re Cooking and Woodex Bearing Company.
Registration is required due to limited class size. Sign up at kennebecestuary.org or call 207-442-8400.
