WATERVILLE — This weekend marks the official opening of Colby College’s $95 million Gordon Center for Creative and Performing Arts, which was the largest academic project in the college’s history and is regarded as one of the most advanced performing arts facilities in New England.

The 74,000-square-foot center includes a state-of-the-art, 325-seat performance hall; multipurpose performance areas for theater, music and dance; studios; classrooms; faculty offices; a small cinema; and an arts incubator to facilitate and nurture emerging art forms.

The center will be home to the departments of music; cinema studies; and performance, theater and dance.

A series of events are being held on campus to commemorate the opening of the center, including a performance by the college symphony Saturday evening.

The complex is named for Michael L. Gordon, a 1966 Colby graduate and trustee. Gordon, who gave the lead gift to the center, is a trustee of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and co-founder of the New York-based investment firm Angelo Gordon.
