At 90, I usually scan through the KJ and mark articles that look too long to read immediately. When the pile of papers get near an inch high, I sit down and go through the stack of kept sections or pages. I read the articles first thought still worth reading. I read them before they go to the recycling box.
This morning, I went through the current stack and read some very current, pointed and insightful articles about climate change, politics, trends and world affairs. Of particular note was the editorial page commentary by Francis Wilkinson headed “It isn’t a crime if MAGA does it,” (May 24). And on the same page, letters titled, “Lack of respect and fake facts divide America” by Tom Turner and “Moral distance shrinking between Hamas, Israeli government” by Nigel Calder. Again, at the bottom of that page, Alan Toth’s Maine Compass about liberalism’ complexity was loaded with ideas. But the paragraph long sentences made grasping the base idea a bit harder.
The May 19 letter by Wendy Ross was right on about the kinship of Hitler, Putin and Trump. As was the page 4 AP article by Peter Smith about the incomprehensible religious loyalty to Trump, “Jesus is their savior, Trump is their candidate.”
And finally, to a former Smokejumper with 12 fires in Idaho and Montana, the May 22 commentary by Mark Gongloff on the lengthening and worsening of wildfires cut to climate change was helpful. Smokejumper magazine has had a batch of articles on the same subject and there is a film on it titled, “Unacceptable Risk.”
