Friends of Merrymeeting Bay is scheduled to offer an evening paddle as part of its 2024 Outside Summer Series.
At 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, people can join Warren Whitney, former FOMB executive director, in departing from Richmond for a paddle around Little Swan Island in the Kennebec River.
Located in the river between Richmond and Dresden, four-mile Swan Island and the adjacent Little Swan Island are part of the Steve Powell Wildlife Management Area and included on the National Register of Historic Places. The island’s name itself is derived from “Swango,” the Abenaki name for “Island of Eagles.”
Participants must bring their own boat and possess at least intermediate paddling skills; PFDs are required.
To register, call Ed Friedman at 207-666-3372.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
