Admirably, the Tariff-Belanger Post 39 of the American Legion and the Madison VFW 7865 are jointly raising money to support a veteran in need. Those who support this endeavor can contact either organization to donate; I am sure such generosity would be appreciated.

I hope, also, that doing so will discourage the members of this organization from carrying out a planned “toll bridge” across the Madison-Anson bridge on Oct. 11.

Fundraising on bridges is a familiar sight in central Maine, on a variety of bridges. The objectives may be worthwhile, but the practice is dangerous and impedes traffic, especially on busy roads, such as the one connecting these two towns.

The Legion and the VFW have a worthy cause, but I hope the members will consider not only the danger to themselves and difficulties for others, but also the message sent to other groups who wish to raise money.

I have seen “tolls” for middle-school trips, cheerleading camps, farm-camp scholarships and assistance for people with disabilities. Most recently, an 11-year-old girl was standing in the middle of the road participating in one such endeavor. Terrifying. (And shouldn’t children and teens learn that work, not panhandling, is the proper means to the end?)

Please support the American Legion and VFW. I hope these organizations will also lend their voices to ending this “toll-bridge” practice.
