Maine received $12 billion more in federal funds than it paid in federal taxes in 2023, the most recent year for which data is available.
Per capita, Mainers paid about $8,311 in federal taxes and received about $17,152 in federal support.
The state’s net gain was 15th among the 31 states that received more funds than they paid out, according to USAFacts, a nonpartisan data initiative. The biggest net gain was in Virginia ($79 billion), followed by Alabama ($41 billion) and Arizona ($40 billion).
Nineteen states paid more to the federal government than they received, led by New York ($89 billion), California ($78 billion) and New Jersey ($70 billion).
In 2023, the federal government collected about $4.67 trillion through taxes on people and businesses. It redistributed about $4.56 trillion back to states through programs such as Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare, food assistance and education grants.
