HAMPDEN — The Fort Kent girls soccer team is hoping the third time is the charm.
Maddie Martin scored in the second overtime to lift the Warriors to a 1-0 win over Winslow in the Class C North final on Tuesday evening at Hampden Academy’s Larrabee Complex.
Fort Kent (13-3-1), the No. 1 seed in the North, will play South champion Maranacook in the state final at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cony High School in Augusta. This is the third straight regional final for the Warriors, who lost in the state final in their previous two trips.
“It was quite the game. I didn’t think it would go into double overtime,” Fort Kent coach Mindy Forino said. “My girls showed up today and played hard from start to end. We had to make some adjustments; we’re not used to playing on turf, the ball rolls differently. … It was a tough game, not going to lie.”
Third-seeded Winslow finishes 12-4-1.
After 102 minutes of play, Martin, a senior, evaded two Winslow defenders and a slide tackle attempt by goalkeeper Isabella Loubier, then tapped the ball into the net before being mobbed by her teammates.
“I think I was pretty much just following my shot,” Martin said. “We always have to crash (the net) after, and I was just (telling the ball), ‘Keep going, keep going,’ and it just ended up in the net.”
Fort Kent kept the pressure on early, owning possession for much of the first half. The Warriors’ closest scoring attempt was with 29:13 in the first half, when Martin had an edge on Winslow’s Emily Daigneault on a breakaway but kicked the ball wide left.
“It was really easy to get down on ourselves, but everybody was really positive,” said Warriors senior Emlyn Nadeau. “We would get down, and they would just lift you back up. It was amazing.”
Forino added: “The mental part of the game is so huge. I just told them to dig down to the deepest part of their heart and soul. (The game) could have gone either way, I’m thankful it went in our direction today.”
Fort Kent had a 19-3 advantage in shots — 8-0 in the first half.
Both teams traded scoring opportunities in the second half but couldn’t find the net. Fort Kent’s win spoiled a brilliant performance by Loubier, a junior, who had seven saves.
Fort Kent has one Class C title, a 1-0 victory over Maranacook in 2018. The Warriors fell 1-0 to Waynflete in the 2023 final and 4-0 to North Yarmouth Academy in 2024.
“We’re going to try 10 times harder than we did (Tuesday) and leave everything on the field,” Martin said.
“I’d like to think the third time’s a charm, that would be sweet,” Forino said. “We’ll go home, go back to the drawing board, watch some film, come up with a game plan and play like we have the past couple games. I believe we can give Maranacook a run for their money.”
