A fire that burned a Windsor home Monday, in which the body of a woman was discovered, remains under investigation.

Shortly before 6 p.m., Monday, the Windsor Fire Department was called to a reported structure fire at 489 Ridge Road, Shannon Moss, public information officer for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said in a news release Tuesday.

Because of information that suggested someone may have been trapped inside, the Office of State Fire Marshal was called to help at the scene.

During a search, firefighters and fire investigators found the body of a deceased woman inside the home.

The victim is believed to be Lorraine Knox, 77, who lived at the home.

Fire crews and investigators remained at the fire scene for much of Monday evening to determine the cause of the fire. It has been reported that Knox had been having problems with her furnace and was using electric heaters to heat the home during the recent cold weather.

The Office of Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an examination to determine the cause of death.

The Department of Public Safety is recommending precautions during cold weather, including keeping space heaters at least 3 feet away from anything flammable and never leaving them unattended; making sure smoke alarms are installed on every level of a home and are tested regularly; having a fire escape plan and making sure all occupants are familiar with it; avoiding overloading electrical outlets; having heating systems inspected and maintained regularly; and installing carbon monoxide monitors outside each sleeping area, on every level and near fuel-burning appliances.
