AUGUSTA — A Skowhegan man charged with murder in connection with the fatal shooting of another man last month made his first appearance Friday in Kennebec County District Court.

Edward Longley, 30, is accused of killing Billyjack Curtis, 51, of Augusta, and injuring Brunswick resident Sherry Gilley, 40, in a shooting on Flagg Street the night of Feb. 2. Maine State Police investigated the case for more than a month before detaining Longley.

Longley was arrested Wednesday afternoon in Skowhegan on charges of murder and elevated aggravated assault.

District Judge Erika Bristol determined Longley will be held without bail until his newly appointed attorney, Daniel Dubé, schedules a Harnish hearing — a pre-trial determination of probable cause that could allow the state to hold Longley in custody without the possibility of bail.

Curtis was found dead shortly after 11 p.m. Feb. 2 by Augusta police, who were called to the scene of 8-10 Flagg St., a four-unit apartment building near downtown Augusta.
