I want to give kudos to Rep. Lori Fowle, D-Vassalboro, for her bill making it easier for small businesses to raise money for charities. That law went into effect Aug. 1.

This new law is important because it gets rid of red tape and prevents a repeat of the incident that affected Augusta’s Red Barn last Thanksgiving. The restaurant received a letter from the state warning them that their weekly Monday community fundraisers might be illegal.

Under the new law, small businesses no longer have to file paperwork with the state whenever they want to help the youth soccer team or support a teenager battling cancer.

This freedom is important for local business owners, many of whom are pillars of their communities. Everybody wins when citizens and businesses come together for a good cause. I’m glad that Rep. Fowle understands this.
