The State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating a fire in Aroostook County on Thursday that left one person dead.
Heavy fire at 1197 Houlton Road in Westfield was first reported around 3:30 p.m. Firefighters responded and searched for the victim after family members told them he was likely trapped inside the home, according to a news release from the fire marshal.
The victim’s body was later found inside the home. His identity will be released pending an autopsy.
Witnesses told investigators the fire may have started in the barn area, but the fire marshal’s office says the official cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The house is located on a rural stretch of Route 1 south of Presque Isle.
