The Maine Trust for Local News has joined a new national partnership with C-SPAN that will bring expanded video coverage of Maine’s competitive 2026 elections to readers.
The initiative will provide the Portland Press Herald and the Maine Trust’s other news organizations throughout the state with access to on-the-ground video coverage of campaign events, candidate appearances and other election-related activities.
The content will be produced by C-SPAN journalists assigned to Maine as part of the network’s new “Road to the Capitol: Candidate Coverage from the Trail” initiative.
The project is designed to expand nonpartisan coverage of competitive U.S. House, U.S. Senate and governor races in battleground states. In addition to airing on C-SPAN’s national platforms, the footage is being made available to participating local news organizations like the Maine Trust.
C-SPAN said in a news release Monday that it hopes the effort will expand voters’ access to candidates and campaign events. The Maine Trust will republish videos on its news websites: pressherald.com, sunjournal.com, centralmaine.com, and on social media.
“We’re excited by this partnership with C-SPAN to expand our election coverage and give Maine voters greater access to the candidates and issues shaping this year’s campaigns,” said Scott Monroe, managing editor of the Maine Trust for Local News. “This partnership complements our own reporting by providing additional video from campaign events across the state, helping voters see and hear directly from candidates.”
Maine is among 10 states selected for the program’s initial rollout because of its competitive federal and statewide races. Other participating states include New Hampshire, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Michigan, Ohio, Iowa, Nebraska and Texas.
With funding provided through support from several national philanthropic organizations, C-SPAN will embed multimedia journalists in participating states to record campaign events and produce full-length videos, news clips and transcripts. The material will also be archived in C-SPAN’s Video Library, creating a permanent public record of the 2026 campaign.
