The article on preserving central Maine’s old buildings (“Can central Maine’s historic buildings survive for the next 250 years?” July 2) did not mention one very successful but hard-fought example: Hubbard Free Library in Hallowell.
Opened in 1880, it is the oldest public library in Maine still in its original building. In this year’s early summer heat blast, thanks to our recently installed heat pumps, the Hubbard was able to invite everyone to use it as a cooling center.
We’ve always offered wonderful books, reference librarians and a place to meet. But our world is changing. Now we also provide free internet, phone charging, even summer cooling.
Albert Einstein is credited as having said, “The only thing you absolutely need to know is the location of the library.” In Hallowell, it’s 115 2nd St.
