Bowdoin College, which has an organic garden, a butcher, and makes its own maple syrup, has zoomed to the top of the Princeton Review’s list of “Best Campus Food.”
Last year Bowdoin was No. 4 on the list, which prospective students who care about food examine closely to help them decide where they should go to college. Bowdoin, located in Brunswick, was one of three Maine colleges to make the cut for this year’s list.
The College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor clocked in at No. 5 for keeping its dining hall open 24 hours a day and making one-third of its meals vegetarian. The meat the college does serve is humanely raised, and seafood is harvested sustainably.
Bates College in Lewiston is No. 13 on the list. Bates, the review noted, runs a three-star certified green restaurant and has an online “Napkin Board” where students can communicate with dining services.
The Princeton Review list is not comprehensive. The review rates the nation’s top 380 colleges in 62 categories, including food. Overall, the colleges that were rated are serving healthier food, substituting water with lemon or cucumber for sodas, are serving more world cuisine and more plant-based proteins.
