Travis Mills was the opening and keynote speaker Tuesday at Thomas College’s fourth annual Diversity Conference.
The theme of this year’s daylong conference was “Disability: Understanding and Overcoming Obstacles,” and it was sponsored by the Thomas College Diversity Committee.
Other topics at the conference included a discussion of Americans with Disabilities Act/human resources law for employees with disabilities by Peter Lowe, an attorney with Brann and Issacson in Lewiston; “From Hit to Homework,” a discussion of brain injuries; and a seminar on learning styles and instructional strategies.
Mills is a Manchester resident and quadruple amputee wounded in 2012 by an improvised explosive device during his third tour of duty as an Army staff sergeant in Afghanistan.
He started the Travis Mills Foundation, which benefits and assists injured veterans and their families and is creating a retreat for disabled and wounded veterans and their families at the former Elizabeth Arden estate in Mount Vernon and Rome and will offer adaptive recreational activities.
