A 29-year-old Brunswick man has been issued a summons for allegedly abusing his black Labrador retriever, Buddy, police said Thursday.

Robert LaChance repeatedly struck the dog and threw it against a wall Feb. 28, police said. At the time of the alleged abuse, Buddy was already suffering from a broken leg that had to be amputated.

Buddy is being treated for his injuries at an undisclosed veterinary facility until a new owner can be found.

LaChance is scheduled to appear in Cumberland County court in Portland to answer the charge May 17.
