WATERVILLE — A false alarm led to the evacuation of Wal-Mart late Friday morning, but firefighters found no fire and discovered the alarm sensor was broken.
A sensor in an alarm was tripped accidentally in the store off Waterville Commons Drive, which prompted employees to evacuate everyone in the store just before noon and Waterville dispatchers to send firefighters over, according to Capt. Shawn Esler, of the Waterville Fire Department.
“Wal-Mart staff did a great job evacuating the building,” he said. “They did exactly what they were trained and should’ve done in the situation.”
Esler said the store contacted the alarm company, which said the sensor was broken. The store is aware of the problem and is in the process of fixing it.
