An elementary school in South Gardiner was evacuated around 1:30 p.m. Thursday after a small fire was reported in one of its classrooms, school officials said.

The fire burned a stack of papers in one of the classrooms at River View Community School and the damage was limited, according to Superintendent Patricia Hopkins, of School Administrative District 11, the Gardiner-based district.

Hopkins said she did not have any other information about the cause or the size of the fire.

The Gardiner Fire Department and the state fire marshal’s office both went to the school. School employees were able to extinguish the fire, said one of the firefighters at the scene.
