Dianna McKeen walks past some of the hundreds of hand-made hats, mittens and scarves draped over the railings in front of the Waterville Public Library on Monday. For the fourth year the Women's Initiative and volunteers have made the winter items — 870 this year — and given them out for free to anyone in need or who knows someone in need, according to founder and director Martha Dempski. "We have been given so much materials from the community and we teach people to knit and make these items for people," Dempski said. She added the annual event happens around Valentine's Day, when some people may be without a partner and it is cold. "This is our chance to give and show kindness and help others," she said.
